    An effective research question

Dissertation must be thought of as an arguable question than simply a topic. The question, in conjunction with your research approach will define the structure for your study and the choice of data to be evaluated.

    An appropriate research question should:

    • Be of intellectual interest to the target readers.
    • Address a relevant problem
    • Be realistic in terms of operations and experiments to be conducted
    • Substantiate with original documents
    • Be clearly stated and simple to understand
    • Be unique and new to the scope of study

Be interesting and captivating to the readers

The Ultimate Goal of a Research

Research papers are prepared with two major objectives- One, to contribute to the existing knowledge community in a particular field of study. The previously published studies are often reviewed by scholars, government officials, corporate professionals and other academic authors for gaining information and employing that for progressive research.

The second major objective of research lies with the author’s end- to showcase this scientific piece of writing in impact factor academic journal. Publishing the research project is a challenging yet rewarding experience for research writers. Paper publication also provides an opportunity for readers to pursue unique and in-depth study about a research topic.

Biasness in the Primary sources of data collection

The Primary sources of data collection mainly involve the self-reporting measures, i.e. the survey or interview form of gathering relevant data. Such techniques often exhibit several biases which the researcher must be cautious about. Some potential issues are:

    • Understatement or Overstatement of the existing problem by the respondents- Such biasness is encountered usually in case of a research that involves respondents to describe their feelings or experiences, which are influenced by the social environment. In such a case, researcher must make his best effort to encourage honest answers by the participants.
    • Response depending upon self-evaluation is another situation of biasness by the respondents wherein they bend their answers to reflect what should be rather than what the actual case is.
    • Non-Remembrance of the past experiences by the participants may instill inaccuracy in research.

Primary sources such as interviews and surveys are important in research, but should be used cautiously.

Skipping from such bias is not just difficult but nearly impossible.

Taking the help of other scholars

Selecting the right research methodology is very important. But many students stumble at this stage. So what can they do to find a good research methodology? They can take the help of other scholars who have worked before in this field. They can ask them as to what methodology they followed. It is a good idea to browse through old samples and prior works in this field and get an idea of the research pattern that was followed. Then with a few modifications, the student will be able to arrive at a methodology that is suitable for his project.

Books or Academic Journals? Which one of the two would lead me to a suitable research topic?

Internet as a source of research

Internet is a great medium of information. Researchers are starting to find that most of the material they require can be gained from the Internet itself. That is why they use the Internet as the starting point for collecting all the information they need. They move on to other sources only when they have exhausted this option. This source even comes in useful when students wish to gauge if they can successfully work on a topic or not. Information on the Internet can even point the researchers to primary sources of data that they can collect later.

The right reasons for doing a PhD

Students who wish to do a PhD should make sure that they are in it for the right reasons. Doing a PhD is not for those who wish to become rich quick. It often involves sacrificing a certain level of income for a few years till the program is complete. A doctorate is also no guarantee of prestige or acquiring status in society. A PhD should only be undertaken by those who have a genuine thirst for knowledge and do not mind spending hours and hours on painstaking research. It is perfect for people who wish to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in a discipline.

    Citing electronic sources

Every system has its own way of referencing somebody else’s work. This is true for the Harvard system as well. There are some points to remember while references are being made to electronic sources. The writer needs to put down the date on which the source is accessed, the electronic address or the email ID that he/she got the material from and the type of electronic media that the source came from. Points are given for the correct use of these references. That is why writers should read the Harvard guide comprehensively and make sure that they get the format right.

The risks of an unformatted dissertation

If the project is not formatted properly, it can end up looking messy and unprofessional. Many students do not take care of this crucial aspect, which is why they lose marks in their dissertation. There are many sample dissertations on the web that students can access, or they can take the help of a professional editor. But they need to make sure that the dissertation is formatted properly and according to the rules laid down by the university and the style of the discipline that they are working on. A badly formatted dissertation could lead the student to pay a heavy price.

The first and foremost risk of an formatted dissertation is it has a lot of chances of getting rejected.

Each discipline demands a different style

When it comes to dissertation writing, there are no hard and fast rules. This is not a case of one size fits all. The style that the dissertation needs to be written in will vary as per the subject that the student is studying. A dissertation in the humanities requires that the student uses a high literary style of writing. A dissertation in economics requires that the student gets all his facts and figures right and use the right graphs and charts to portray them. Sample dissertations should be referred before the student starts the writing process.

The formatting would also vary with different disciplines.
